Step 1 of 5
Understand this charge
The minor card charge vs. the serious “no insurance” charge.
Under section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, a driver must carry an insurance card (your “pink slip”) and surrender it for inspection when a police officer asks. Failing to do so is the charge on your ticket.
This is a minor offence — typically a low set fine with no demerit points. It is very different from operating a motor vehicle without insurance (CAIA s. 2), which is a serious offence carrying fines that start in the thousands of dollars. If you actually had valid insurance and simply couldn’t produce the card, you are almost certainly dealing with the minor charge — and you’re in a strong position.
Check the exact wording and set fine on your ticket so you know which charge you’re facing before you go any further.
